Reimagining Acute Care Delivery at Home
How can we transform acute care to thrive in a home environment?
Hospital-at-home (HaH), or hospital level care in a patient's home, continues to grow as an alternative model of care delivery. However, delivering acute care at home presents unique challenges, requiring the adaptation of hospital protocols to fit in-home settings. Collaborating with One Workplace, we explored innovative services and products to support a distributed acute care workforce.
Our Approach:
Secondary and Expert Research
Design Scenarios
Conceptual Design Development
Expert-Led Research and Insights
We convened a panel of experts, conducting interviews with six subject matter specialists and reviewing the latest HaH care publications. This research unveiled several opportunities for future design. From this, we created conceptual prototypes and gathered feedback from our expert panel, summarizing these insights into a public report and presentation that highlighted key findings about the future of the provider experience.
Uncovering Experience Opportunities for an Emerging Care Delivery Mode
We identified a key opportunity to explore the provider journey, particularly in addressing the unique needs of a highly mobile clinical workforce. While mapping the provider experience, we uncovered four core insights from our discussions with experts in the field. These included topics such as “how might we increase productive time for providers while in transit?”
Drawing on Provocative Concepts to Refine Research
Rather than designing full-scale services, we used four provocative concepts to explore HaH provider experiences. These concepts, grounded in provider well-being frameworks, generated valuable feedback from key stakeholders. This approach demonstrated how creating prototypes during research can lead to new insights.
Our Impact:
Addressed a critical gap in HaH service planning: the distributed-provider experience.
Enhanced productivity during staff transport.
Streamlined DME delivery through existing supply chains.
Recreated the benefits of a physical breakroom for mobile employees.
